Humane Society Silicon Valley highly recommends positive training. Punishment, such as striking or yelling can make a pet fearful, which may result in aggression toward you or one of your family members.
Punishment alone rarely solves any behavior problems; it stresses you and your pet and it never teaches your pet what it should be doing instead of misbehaving.
