Before you Adopt Your Cat
THANK YOU for taking the time to learn before making
such an important decision.
Kittens/Cats don't need as much time as dogs do,
mainly because their training needs are much less.
Most kittens come "hardwired" to use a litter pan,
which makes things much easier for you. However,
before you add a cat to your life, take the following
into account:
SOCIALIZATION. Some cats prefer to be solitary, and
others prefer the company of another cat. Sometimes,
though, it is hard to know if a mature cat will accept
another cat easily, so if you have the time and money,
you may consider adopting two cats at the same time so
that they can grow up together and keep each other
company.
Two kittens will bond most easily, but adult cats will
take time to adjust to each other. You can find
information on Introducing a Cat to a Cat on our
website under Training and Behavior Center.
TRAINING. Training a cat or kitten to use a litter pan
is not difficult; most already seem to know what to
do.
- Cats are resistant to change, so get a roomy
litterbox for EACH cat in the household.
- Select a type of litter (go easy on the perfumes,
please), place the bathroom area in an out-of-the-way
but accessible place.
- Clean it often, AND LEAVE IT THAT WAY. Most
inappropriate elimination issues stem from people
changing brands or types of litter too often, putting
the box in a "scary" spot, not cleaning it often
enough, and not allowing the cat privacy during
elimination.
- Cats like routine, so find a setup that works for
all of you, and don't make drastic changes.
What about other types of training? Your kitten or cat
will need to be taught how to play gently with you and
with other pets, how to be groomed, how and where to
scratch, what sorts of behaviors are acceptable, and
what is not. Use positive training methods to prevent
bad behaviors.
SUPPLIES NEEDED.
- Food and water bowls
- Litter pans
- Toys
- Scratching posts
- Carriers
- I.D tags
- Beds
You will also need to decide on a good quality food
for your cat. A premium-quality food will help prevent
medical problems later, for starters.
PLAYTIME AND EXERCISE. Does your cat need to go
outdoors to live a fulfilled life? Absolutely not.
Indoor cats live longer, are healthier, and do not get
run over by cars. Outdoor cats are susceptible to
disease, cars, fights with other animals, cruelty, and
they annoy neighbors and kill wildlife, too. If you
never let your cat outside, he won't know what he's
missing. ALL cats are perfectly content indoors.
YOUR TIME & MONEY. Owning a cat costs money,
especially at the beginning of your relationship. Are
you prepared? What about time? How much can you afford
to spend?
CARE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. As your pet matures,
his needs will change. Kittens start out being very
needy, but with proper care and training, become less
so as they grow. But his life changes will be yours.
Cats can live up to 20 years with the proper care.
MICROCHIPPING. Microchipping is a great way to make
sure lost pets can get home again. At this time you
are responsible for microchipping your pet. Any local
vet provides this service for a minimal fee. Make sure
your pet wears an updated I.D. tag on his collar at
all times, too.
