Fox Terrier Rescue got the call we all panic about. "We have
9 Wire Fox Terriers in need, can you take them?" As it turns
out, a major backyard breeder that had been a problem for
us for years had been discovered by the local animal control.
She was told to "get rid" of about 10 dogs. She planned on
taking them down to the vets to be put down. That was her
answer to "excess" dogs.
The youngest were three sisters that were 10 months old,
and others that ranged from 2 to 4 years old. The oldest
was Maddie at 6 years. She was in the worst shape of all
of them due to more years of neglect. All but one had apparently
been crated most of their lives. None had any socializing
or medical care.
A third party had found out about them and taken them in
from the breeder to save their lives. That's when we got
the call. Maddie had a lot of medical problems, but she fully
recuperated with love and care. During her stay in foster
care, she could relax and get used to being away from the
horror of the place that she had lived in all of her life.
Maddie came to live with an Animal Rescue and Care volunteer
on July 6, 1998. She passed away from cancer on November
2, 2004. Cathy says she was the most special, intelligent,
loving little girl she ever had the good fortune to be with.
She shared everything in our almost seven years together,
including cross-country moves and a couple of Florida hurricanes
(and yes! She lived with 2 cats). She was her best friend
and companion and she will live in her heart forever. Rescue
is truly the greatest thing you can do in your life - it
enriches and saves the lives of all involved, human and animal
companion.
